The first commercial altimeter I ever flew was a RRC2X from Missile Works. It's a very nice barometric dual deployment altimeter. It's rugged, small, easy to use and seems very dependable. The best part is the price, at about $90 it's a real buy. Missile Works is also one of the few rocketry suppliers I've dealt with that shipped quickly.
It's easy to configure, and the instructions are clear and easy to understand. It's a great beginners altimeter, and would serve you well on large projects as well.
The only limitation I found was the output transistors are only 1.5 amp, and the unit uses a single battery to run the computer and to initiate the deployment charge. It's crucial to use a low current e-match or flash bulb with these units.
